Agency Description:

The Cambodian Association of America (CAA) is committed to improving the quality of life in our community by providing linguistically and culturally appropriate social, health, outreach education and employment services to low-income children and families.

CAA, incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1975, is the oldest and largest Cambodian organization in the United States. The organization has been instrumental in establishing the Cambodian community in Long Beach and promoting small businesses along the Anaheim and Atlantic corridors, an area known to many as “Cambodia Town.”

The mission of the early founders was to assist Cambodian refugees in Southern California in acculturating to life in America, while preserving the Cambodian culture, customs, and values. During its first years, CAA operated on the resources of its members out of a garage with little assistance from outside funding sources. Even so they were successful in providing translation, transportation, and acculturation classes to newly arriving refugees; in advocating for the rights of Southeast Asians on a local and national level; in assisting over twenty Cambodian associations in establishing throughout the U.S.; and in participating in a national cluster project relocating newly arriving refugees throughout the U.S.

Currently, CAA operates fourteen programs funded by federal, state, county, city and private foundations. Since 2000, CAA has expanded services to serve non-Asian groups, including Hispanics, African Americans, and Caucasians. Each year over 3,000 people receive direct services from CAA. Our outreach education programs reach over 15,000 people per year.

Full Service Partnership and Field Capable Clinical Services are designed to offer comprehensive mental health services for older adults age 55 and above, who may experience challenges accessing the traditional services due to their limited mobility, frailty or other limitations, to address their emotional, physical and daily living needs.

Services are offered at a location convenient to older adults such as in their home, their community or offices of their health care providers.

The FCCS and FSP programs have a multi-disciplinary team that provides culturally appropriate support and resources. The team is a collaboration of consumers who are in recovery, social workers, case managers and psychiatrists. Services are consumer-centered, which allows each consumer to choose services necessary for them selves.

Services available: counseling, medication services, education and support, referrals and linkages, assistance in developing social and community relationships, assistance in living arrangements, assistance in obtaining financial and health care benefits that you are entitled to, and culturally appropriate services.

Full Service Partnerships are available to individuals age 60 and above whose lives are greatly affected by serious emotional challenges and/or who is or has been homeless, frequently in psychiatric hospitals or living with family members or roommates and is at risk of the above.

Program Description:

The Cambodian Association of America offers several types of case management services for seniors.

The Cambodian Senior Wellness Program/Social Services Grant provides Cambodian seniors with culturally and linguistically appropriate psychosocial activities and services, including Case management, exercise programs, informational presentations and discussions, health promotion and educational seminars, classes in survival English, Khmer cultural activities, nutritious meals and referrals to a continuum of health and human services including food stamps enrollment, Medi-cal enrollment, counseling and mental health programs and education.

Health Access for Pacific Asian Seniors (HAPAS) focuses on capacity building and community health education regarding adult immunizations, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Its goal has shifted towards policy change in physical activities and healthy diet. A Walking Group has been created based on the results of our community focus group, in hope that this walking group activity will lead to community acknowledgement and recognition of the benefits of exercise and health diet, which could eventually lead to more advocacy for policy change.

The Supportive Services Program (SSP)SSP offers case management services to Cambodians who are 60+ years old. Services range from assistance with doctor's consultations, bicultural services (translation), medication support, housing, family counseling, socialization, linkages to various community resources and advocacy.

The Family Caregiver Program is comprised of four components: community education, training, support groups and case management. The education and training covers understanding the roles of caregivers and available caregiver resources. Case management is for those clients who need additional individual support. Support groups offer additional support and networking to current caregivers.
